To be sure it is unloaded, instead of pulling the trigger

All four rules, all the time! If you are dry firing, or dropping the hammer to take apart your Glock, or whatever, it takes mere moments to ask yourself, do I have a safe backstop if the gun were, somehow, to fire?

Treat every gun as a loaded gun and you will not have occasion to say, "But I didn't know it was loaded!"
